Mattresses are the essential part of any bed. This is the surface you typically spend almost half your life on and as they can be expected to last ten years or more it’s important that you choose the right one for you.

Many people who have trouble sleeping or who suffer from aching joints or bad backs would be well advised to avoid the normal open spring mattress. This basic product is perfectly adequate for the average person, because the springs are evenly distributed and apply equal resistance throughout the mattress. However, for those with additional needs, a pocket spring mattress is probably a better idea.

The pocket spring mattress incorporates springs housed separately in their own fabric pockets and these act like small pistons, rising and lowering independently as weight is applied to them. This provides better support and is ideal for anyone suffering from a bad back.

Natural latex is another choice for anyone with trouble sleeping, as these mattresses also contour themselves to the body. In addition, they are hypoallergenic and anti-microbial, so that anyone with respiratory problems will benefit from a night spent on one of these mattresses.

At the upper end of the mattress range are the memory foam mattresses, made from a material originally developed by NASA for use in space. This remarkable material reacts to body heat by softening, so providing the perfect level of support throughout the body. Memory foam mattress prices are coming down all the time and you might be surprised at how affordable they have become.

Space is at a premium in most modern dwellings, whether bedsits or studio flats, small apartments or detached houses. We always manage to quickly fill up the spaces we live in and are always looking for more.

The bedroom in particular seems to get cluttered with clothes, furniture and other items and it can be a nightmare keeping it tidy. The master bedroom is typically dominated by a double or king-size bed, which is fine if the space is available, but smaller rooms can often benefit from a more creative approach and there are plenty of other types of bed to choose from.

Sofa beds are especially useful for small rooms such as guest rooms or kids’ rooms. As guest beds and children’s beds they are ideal, freeing up valuable space and transforming into comfortable sofas when not being used for sleeping. You might want to consider bunk beds, especially in the children’s rooms.

The latest generation of sofa beds are so attractive and comfortable that putting one in the living room will not be an eyesore and when guests turn up unexpectedly they are perfect for accommodating them.

Flexibility and adaptability are the hallmarks of the modern, busy lifestyle and futons and sofa beds, as well as divan beds that typically have drawers beneath for storage, can greatly add to the functionality of any home.

From leather beds, metal beds and wooden beds to bunk beds, divan beds and many others, the final choice is down to you.

If you have become bored with the look of your master bedroom and you have decided that the cause of this boredom is that bed frame you have used for years, you might want to consider adding some charm and elegance by purchasing a metal bed frame. You can find high quality metal beds constructed out of brass or wrought iron, or manufactured out of cheaper metals such as aluminium.

Your budget will help you determine which option that you go with, but brass and iron will always be the wisest investment. Consider the décor and theme of the bedroom when selecting one of the metal beds available in the stores or online. Additionally, you need to do your homework when you are shopping for this type of bed because the myriad of choices available makes your selection extremely difficult and even somewhat frustrating.

Searching online when you begin to shop for metal beds is your best option because it saves you time and considerable money in the long run. It also saves you the trouble and inconvenience of paying for the bed to be delivered or having to pick it up yourself while fighting the crowds and the traffic in the process. In many cases you can find an online retailer that offers free delivery when you purchase one of their metal beds.

Some people look down on metal beds as being old-fashioned or stodgy. But metal beds can be not only a wonderfully cost-effective choice for furniture, but also add sleek, modern lines to your décor. Today’s metal beds are not those of your grandfather; they come in every shape and colour imaginable, and can be custom-designed to give you a distinct look for a very reasonable cost.

Metal bedframes can be built of steel, stainless steel, wrought iron, aluminium, and combinations thereof. The lines of the bed can be soft, open and graceful, or squared up for a more dynamic look. Because metal can be bent and shaped more easily than wood, you can have anything from a musical staff to scenes from an African safari adorning your bedroom set.

Many people choose metal beds as a way to display their bed coverings in a way that wood can never match. The colours and textures of your room can be clearly visible, even through the headboard and footboard. For example, should you choose the soothing shapes and colours of the ocean, a bedframe with long, wavy lines and linens of ocean colours will allow you to relax the minute you walk in the door.

Metal beds can also be painted much more easily than wooden bed frames, allowing you to change the look of your room without replacing all the furniture. One afternoon with a few cans of spray paint and you have an instant update, with little money expended.

Add a good, supportive mattress and box spring set, and you’ve got the perfect recipe for a wonderful night’s sleep.

One choice in bedroom design that is often overlooked is the leather bed. Leather, of course, has been used for centuries in everything from water-carrying bags to purses, shoes and everything in between. Over those centuries, people have learned how to tan and colour leather so that it can match any décor at all.

Leather has a beautiful patina of understated elegance that will add a touch of designer flair to your home without breaking the bank. It’s easy to care for, needing little more than occasional dusting and treatment with a moisturizing cleaner.

Sleek, modern designs are often complimented with a darker colour of leather. For example, black is the ultimate modern colour, but many people are opting for rich shades of deep green, burgundy, or mahogany. With some leather beds, a wood or metal frame is exposed to offset the leather; brushed stainless is a favourite choice against black or deep brown leather.

Should you have a specific design scheme in mind, many leather beds can be ordered in custom colours. You may have to wait a few weeks for your sleigh bed in Mystic Green to arrive, but no other product will offer you the flexibility to get exactly what you want than a leather bed.

Leather beds are available as divan beds, sofa beds, and all manner of standard beds. And remember, if you want a cost-effective design choice, you can replace your headboard with a leather headboard for an instant change of pace that doesn’t require replacing the entire bed!

Mattresses are the key elements of all types of beds, after all, they are the part you sleep on, and choosing the right mattress can be crucial to your comfort especially if you have special requirements.

The basic type of mattress available today is the open spring design. Springs are arranged in a grid pattern throughout the entire mattress, connected by coiled wire, which keeps the mattress in its oblong shape. The springs apply equal resistance at all points in the mattress and they are suitable for the average person.

One step more advanced than open spring mattresses are the pocket spring mattresses, where springs are individually fitted into their own separate fibre pockets. This gives them the ability to react independently to pressure, allowing for a more comfortable night’s sleep.

Natural latex mattresses are more suitable for anyone who suffers from aches and pains, as they provide extra support for the head, neck and back areas. They are also useful for people with respiratory problems as they are hypoallergenic and anti-microbial. Natural latex mattresses mould themselves to the contours of the body to provide a more comfortable night.

At the top end of the mattress comfort range are memory foam mattresses, which are made from a material that reacts to body heat by softening, so that the whole body is accommodated to optimal pressure levels, giving maximum support and preventing aches and pains.

Be sure to spend some time considering your personal requirements before deciding on a mattress.

Good bedroom design is centred on the bed, and the focal point of any bed is of course the headboard. Choosing the appropriate headboard can transform your room quickly and affordably.

Wooden headboards are the most traditional and come in a variety of styles, from antique to contemporary. The headboard is typically mounted to the bed frame and provides a sturdy backing for pillows.

Metal headboards are equally versatile, offering styles as varied as heirloom wrought iron to modern abstract or geometric lines. Bronze, stainless steel, iron, brushed aluminium, and brass finishes complete virtually any look.

Upholstered headboards are padded with foam or batting and can be covered in fabric, leather, vinyl, and more. If you like to sit up in bed reading or watching television, padded headboards offer superior comfort. You can also customise the fabric or upholstery to compliment your decor.

Headboards that offer storage solutions like drawers and bookshelves are great space savers. If your bedroom doesn’t have enough room for a nightstand or you need to have an alarm clock directly on top of you in order to improve its efficacy, a storage headboard could be the perfect solution. You’ll also have plenty of room for a small reading lamp, books, a glass of water, and more all within easy reach.

If you’re redecorating a bedroom or guest room, don’t let the bed’s headboard be an afterthought. Selecting the perfect headboard will complete the overall look and feel of the decor.

Leather has long stood for elegance and sophistication—with a bit of an edge. If your bedroom could use a rock-and-roll shake-up, consider a new leather bed to make the perfect statement.

Genuine leather beds offer loads of benefits, no matter what your decor. Surprisingly easy to maintain, leather is durable and improves with age. It won’t tear, rip, or crack; its colour won’t fade; it holds its shape; and it supports thick padding for added comfort. Leather headboards also come in an array of stylish colours, weathered finishes, and decorative accents.

If you’re thinking about purchasing a leather bed, you have to understand the different types of leather that furniture manufacturers use. Beds and headboards made from full aniline leather are soft and luxurious, but require extra care and are less durable than other leathers. Aniline leather is especially prone to discolouration when exposed to direct sunlight, and it will stain if spilled upon. Semi-aniline leather has the same comfort and softness as full aniline, but is more durable. It is pigmented, making it stand up better in harsh light and resist stains and soiling. Nubuck, commonly used to make leather shoes, is actually brushed aniline leather. The resulting texture creates visual interest and adds durability.

Once you’ve chosen the type of leather that suits your needs, there’s no limit to what can be done with a leather bed. Metal accents, decorative cut-outs, embellishments, collage, and more will all enhance the look of your bed and bring your bedroom together.

Shopping for sofa beds should never be an afterthought. If you want your overnight guests to sleep happy, take care when choosing your next sofa bed.

Modern sofa beds provide plenty of variety in terms of style and features. Some have a mattress that folds out, while others allow you to simply drop the back down. Others unfold in the traditional complex manner, requiring strength and perhaps an advanced physics degree. As such, ease of use is one of the most important considerations when buying a sofa bed; you or your guests will most likely be setting up the sofa bed late at night, so the easier the bed is to operate the better.

Many sofa beds have ample interior space, so it’s possible to leave them fully made up when they’re not in use. Though you’ll need to find space to store pillows and duvets, you can simply make the bed with fresh linens after guests leave and not have to worry about it until the next sleep over.

You’re probably thinking about a sofa bed to help you save space, so size comes to the forefront when you’re shopping. Just don’t forget to properly measure the size of the unit when it’s opened. The folded sofa may fit perfectly in your spare room, but will half of the bed be out the door (or through the wall) when it’s opened? More importantly, will your guests have ample space in the room when the bed is open to exit quickly and safely in case of emergency?

It’s amazing how dramatically a fitted wardrobe can transform a bedroom. Whilst it may be a step or three away from full property development, fitting wall-to-ceiling sliding doors to an alcove wardrobe area will smarten a room immeasurably – and with no architects fees to worry about! It won’t tax your building skills: it’s a straightforward DIY job. If the doors are wooden, you might want to finish off with a little painting and decorating, but there’s no plastering, plumbing or wiring involved.

The doors glide along tracks fitted securely to the ceiling and floor. Depending on the dimensions of the door, you might need to use wooden spacers, either from the ceiling or from the floor, to fix the track to. A suitably deep length of wooden batten along the ceiling or floor is probably the best option.

Measure the width of the wardrobe area and mark this length on the track, using a tri-square. Cut the track at this point with a hack saw. Making sure that the track is parallel with the rear wall, fit it to the ceiling (or to the ceiling spacer). Use a spirit level to get the track dead horizontal before tightening the screws.

Repeat the process for the lower track, but before fixing securely, hang the doors from the top and check that the wheels run smoothly in the bottom track. Use a spirit level to get the doors hanging vertically, shifting the lower track into place as you adjust them. Remove the doors, fix the lower track and re-hang the doors. Enjoy your new-look room.
