When you decide to paint or decorate your home, there are a few standard items you should make sure to purchase before you get started.

Paint Brushes and Rollers

Paint brushes are best for applying paint to skirting boards, windowsills, door frames, and around the edges of walls where rollers can’t reach. The size of your brush really depends upon the size of the surface, but don’t be fooled into thinking you can do it all with one size. It’s a good idea to buy a few different sizes; and make sure they are decent quality and clean – otherwise, you’ll end up with bristles in your paintwork.

Rollers are the best for covering a wall. There are two sizes to choose from – 100mm and 228mm. They also come in two types; foam and cloth. Foam rollers provide a smoother surface, whereas cloth gives a bit of texture.

Sand Paper and Block

The key to professional-looking decorating work is good preparation, and sanding is often an essential part of that. Sand paper comes in varying levels of “grit”. Lower grits are good for initial sanding, while higher grits provide a smooth surface.

Filling Knife

Part of the prepping process includes filling cracks and holes in your walls or wood; the best tool for that job is a filling knife. It’s also handy if you’re removing wallpaper.

White Spirit

If you’re using oil-based paints, white spirit is a must for thinning too-thick paint, cleaning up accidental spills and splatters, and keeping your brushes clean.

While designing the perfect bathroom environment, one important consideration that needs to be taken into account is that of lighting. When natural light is not available, artificial light is obviously required, and both vanity lights and general lighting need to be carefully taken considered. Bathroom vanity unit lights usually come down to one or two lights (sometimes more depending on the whims of the individual consumer) above the mirror, although other options include using recessed ceiling lighting above the cabinet. The bathroom mirror itself obviously needs to be clearly illuminated at all times, as this is where the important daily ritual of personal grooming takes place.

In general, there are considered to be four distinct kinds of lighting in a bathroom – ambient lighting, accent lighting, decorative lighting, and task lighting. Ambient lighting lights the room but in a relaxed, soothing manner, with chandeliers, recessed lights and vanity lighting some of the options for creating the desired effect. Accent lighting is for atmosphere and what is termed ‘visual drama’, often using lighting to highlight specific areas or objects in the bathroom for decorative reasons. Track lighting is often the best for this particular purpose. Decorative lighting takes accent lighting still further, with the lighting fixtures themselves being a part of the overall decorative effect – chandeliers, candelabra, and candles (either real or electrical) being good examples. Task lighting, as the name suggests, is for more practical purposes – ensuring that a particular area or areas is sufficiently illuminated to carry out a specific purpose (such as shaving in front of the bathroom mirror).

Bathroom lighting is as important a part of bathroom design as the furniture and general décor.

There is nothing worse than an untidy bathroom. What’s more, apart from detracting from the ambiance of the room, it can also be harder to keep things sparkling clean if you are constantly having to move things around all the time.

This is when you need to consider adding a bathroom cabinet of some kind to your design. It doesn’t matter whether you have much space or not, you can always purchase a slim-line bathroom cabinet or perhaps even one that sits on the floor so you can move it around if need be.

If you only have a small medicine cabinet at the moment, you can easily add a bathroom cabinet into the mix. Once you have something you can put all those odds and ends in, you will notice how much less cluttered the whole room becomes and then will be easier to keep clean and tidy. Once you have used your shampoo you can simply pop the bottle back in the cupboard and keep the room a pleasant and nice place to be.

You will also notice how easy it is to clean the room, since you just have to wipe over the bathroom cabinet from time to time. All the other surfaces will also be easier to clean since they won’t have bottles and other similar items sitting on them. Buying a bathroom cabinet couldn’t be easier, since there is a wide range of designs to choose from and various bathroom suppliers such as UK Bathrooms who can provide expert advise about your purchase. Which one will prove to be the ideal solution for you?

Space is at a premium in most modern dwellings, whether bedsits or studio flats, small apartments or detached houses. We always manage to quickly fill up the spaces we live in and are always looking for more.

The bedroom in particular seems to get cluttered with clothes, furniture and other items and it can be a nightmare keeping it tidy. The master bedroom is typically dominated by a double or king-size bed, which is fine if the space is available, but smaller rooms can often benefit from a more creative approach and there are plenty of other types of bed to choose from.

Sofa beds are especially useful for small rooms such as guest rooms or kids’ rooms. As guest beds and children’s beds they are ideal, freeing up valuable space and transforming into comfortable sofas when not being used for sleeping. You might want to consider bunk beds, especially in the children’s rooms.

The latest generation of sofa beds are so attractive and comfortable that putting one in the living room will not be an eyesore and when guests turn up unexpectedly they are perfect for accommodating them.

Flexibility and adaptability are the hallmarks of the modern, busy lifestyle and futons and sofa beds, as well as divan beds that typically have drawers beneath for storage, can greatly add to the functionality of any home.

From leather beds, metal beds and wooden beds to bunk beds, divan beds and many others, the final choice is down to you.

These days, many people are turning to property development as a way of making good money. House prices are usually high, especially in major cities, so if a property can be snapped up at a bargain price and turned into a desirable residence, it can return a pretty profit for the developer.

If you are good at DIY, for instance, and do not mind the hard physical work involved, there is no reason why you should not be able to make a success out of property development.

The main thing to remember is that the lower the price the bigger the potential profit margin, and that you must not stint on research before leaping in. You need to check out the area and its property prices, through the press, online, and with local estate agents. Make sure the property you are going to buy is suited to its purpose. If you are thinking of letting it out to students, for example, it had better be near a local college or university. Students ideally prefer to fall straight out of bed and into their classes, rather than take a couple of hours to get there, so you might be disappointed with the wrong strategy.

Another thing to remember is that property prices are constantly fluctuating. They go down on occasion, as well as up, so do not be tempted to stretch your budget, or you might find yourself up a creek without a paddle.

Bearing these points in mind, get a good property with potential at the lowest price you can, then set to work transforming it into someone’s dream house or groovy digs, and see the cash start rolling in.

If you have become bored with the look of your master bedroom and you have decided that the cause of this boredom is that bed frame you have used for years, you might want to consider adding some charm and elegance by purchasing a metal bed frame. You can find high quality metal beds constructed out of brass or wrought iron, or manufactured out of cheaper metals such as aluminium.

Your budget will help you determine which option that you go with, but brass and iron will always be the wisest investment. Consider the décor and theme of the bedroom when selecting one of the metal beds available in the stores or online. Additionally, you need to do your homework when you are shopping for this type of bed because the myriad of choices available makes your selection extremely difficult and even somewhat frustrating.

Searching online when you begin to shop for metal beds is your best option because it saves you time and considerable money in the long run. It also saves you the trouble and inconvenience of paying for the bed to be delivered or having to pick it up yourself while fighting the crowds and the traffic in the process. In many cases you can find an online retailer that offers free delivery when you purchase one of their metal beds.

Some people look down on metal beds as being old-fashioned or stodgy. But metal beds can be not only a wonderfully cost-effective choice for furniture, but also add sleek, modern lines to your décor. Today’s metal beds are not those of your grandfather; they come in every shape and colour imaginable, and can be custom-designed to give you a distinct look for a very reasonable cost.

Metal bedframes can be built of steel, stainless steel, wrought iron, aluminium, and combinations thereof. The lines of the bed can be soft, open and graceful, or squared up for a more dynamic look. Because metal can be bent and shaped more easily than wood, you can have anything from a musical staff to scenes from an African safari adorning your bedroom set.

Many people choose metal beds as a way to display their bed coverings in a way that wood can never match. The colours and textures of your room can be clearly visible, even through the headboard and footboard. For example, should you choose the soothing shapes and colours of the ocean, a bedframe with long, wavy lines and linens of ocean colours will allow you to relax the minute you walk in the door.

Metal beds can also be painted much more easily than wooden bed frames, allowing you to change the look of your room without replacing all the furniture. One afternoon with a few cans of spray paint and you have an instant update, with little money expended.

Add a good, supportive mattress and box spring set, and you’ve got the perfect recipe for a wonderful night’s sleep.

One choice in bedroom design that is often overlooked is the leather bed. Leather, of course, has been used for centuries in everything from water-carrying bags to purses, shoes and everything in between. Over those centuries, people have learned how to tan and colour leather so that it can match any décor at all.

Leather has a beautiful patina of understated elegance that will add a touch of designer flair to your home without breaking the bank. It’s easy to care for, needing little more than occasional dusting and treatment with a moisturizing cleaner.

Sleek, modern designs are often complimented with a darker colour of leather. For example, black is the ultimate modern colour, but many people are opting for rich shades of deep green, burgundy, or mahogany. With some leather beds, a wood or metal frame is exposed to offset the leather; brushed stainless is a favourite choice against black or deep brown leather.

Should you have a specific design scheme in mind, many leather beds can be ordered in custom colours. You may have to wait a few weeks for your sleigh bed in Mystic Green to arrive, but no other product will offer you the flexibility to get exactly what you want than a leather bed.

Leather beds are available as divan beds, sofa beds, and all manner of standard beds. And remember, if you want a cost-effective design choice, you can replace your headboard with a leather headboard for an instant change of pace that doesn’t require replacing the entire bed!

Vintage bathroom accessories look stunning in any bathroom. Even modern style bathroom suites can benefit from a few items of genuine class. Many of these pieces can be found in DIY stores or designer bathroom stores but for those who are looking for the genuine article then salvage yards are the best place to go. There are many bargains to be found in this sort of place but be prepared to pay a lot for the most desirable items. Secondhand shops and house clearance dealers can also offer some surprising finds. Collector’s fairs offer some of the better quality items and also items needing some restoration.

Porcelain Victorian soap dishes are available in many antique stores. Porcelain accessories are a popular feature in vintage bathrooms and help to recreate the look of a bygone era. Vintage bathroom accessories can be accompanied by wooden towel rails and traditional bathroom radiators. If wooden accessories will not suit the style of the bathroom then these items are available in other materials such as chrome.

Some salvage yards will produce finds such as complete bathroom suites, often in good condition, for those who want the genuine article. If a reproduction suite or accessories is more suitable, then there are many online stores offering these items, although you may find that brand new reproductions are sometimes more expensive than the genuine salvaged article.

Finishing touches include reproduction bathroom linen, which can also come monogrammed. These linens are in Victorian style, in various colours, all with embroidered edges. Vintage style robe hooks help to complete the look, and are ideal for hanging bathrobes and other items on the back of the bathroom door.

Mattresses are the key elements of all types of beds, after all, they are the part you sleep on, and choosing the right mattress can be crucial to your comfort especially if you have special requirements.

The basic type of mattress available today is the open spring design. Springs are arranged in a grid pattern throughout the entire mattress, connected by coiled wire, which keeps the mattress in its oblong shape. The springs apply equal resistance at all points in the mattress and they are suitable for the average person.

One step more advanced than open spring mattresses are the pocket spring mattresses, where springs are individually fitted into their own separate fibre pockets. This gives them the ability to react independently to pressure, allowing for a more comfortable night’s sleep.

Natural latex mattresses are more suitable for anyone who suffers from aches and pains, as they provide extra support for the head, neck and back areas. They are also useful for people with respiratory problems as they are hypoallergenic and anti-microbial. Natural latex mattresses mould themselves to the contours of the body to provide a more comfortable night.

At the top end of the mattress comfort range are memory foam mattresses, which are made from a material that reacts to body heat by softening, so that the whole body is accommodated to optimal pressure levels, giving maximum support and preventing aches and pains.

Be sure to spend some time considering your personal requirements before deciding on a mattress.
