Conservatories are great additions to any property. A well-built and well-presented conservatory adds to the value of your property, gives you additional space to relax in and is a great way to conserve the heat from your own property as well as from the sun.

Many conservatories can be bought in ready-to-build packs. DIY conservatory planning and construction is very common. This means that there is an array of advice available online from others who have tried and succeeded – or those who have solved temporary setbacks – to build their own conservatory.

Things to Consider Before Constructing your Own Conservatory
The first thing you should do before setting out to build your own conservatory is to check whether or not you need planning permission. Your local authority can deny or grant this permission; do check this before building as there have been cases where people have been fined or have had to deconstruct their conservatories because they didn’t have permission.

You are most likely to need planning permission if your conservatory is to face a road; if you live in a listed building or site of historical interest; if the conservatory overlooks your neighbour’s property or if it is likely to increase the risk of fire.

Even if you do not need planning permission, you should check that you meet building regulations. Building regulations are most likely to apply if your conservatory is to be bigger than 30sqft or if you install electrical wiring.

Why consider a loft conversion?

Creating a loft space is a great way to utilise your home’s maximum capacity. A finished loft conversion gives you a stylish bonus room or storage space and adds value to your home. If you have unused space on the topmost level of your home, you may want to consider a loft conversion.

What kind of loft conversion is right for me?

The sky’s the limit when it comes to options for loft conversions. Create a bedroom, bathroom, media room or home theatre, children’s playroom, home office, gym, hobby room, or any other space that suits your needs. With a variety of materials and options, you can design and build a room that is cost-efficient and attractive.

Do I need to obtain permission for a loft conversion?

As long as your project doesn’t require significant changes to the exterior or roofline of your home, you probably do not need planning permission for the project. However, you will have to comply with regulations and other guidelines, so it’s wise to consult a professional builder or your local council, who can give you more information about requirements in your area.

What are building regulations?

Building regulations are a set of guidelines meant to govern the health and safety of workers, occupants of your home, and your neighbours. Your local authority and building control surveyor dictate these regulations. Be sure to speak with authorities or a reputable builder for more information.

A gazebo is a wonderful addition to any garden, especially when there is a special occasion. A nicely decorated gazebo can be the perfect backdrop for the photographs following a wedding or christening.

The gazebo posts can be decorated with trailing greenery, flowers or fairy lights to give it a special touch. The gazebo itself can be used as a temporary bar, or for setting up a buffet. It can also be used as a bit of a refuge, either for the children to play in, or for the adults to rest away from the throngs of people.

If you already have a gazebo in your garden or are planning to have one constructed, then it makes sense to use it for this. It may be, however, that you do not want to have a permanent structure installed, or would consider a portable gazebo to be a bit of a hassle. In this situation it is possible to hire a gazebo for a short period of time.

This solution makes sense for a lot of people who do not have the opportunity to spend a lot of time in their gardens but want that extra touch for a special occasion. Gazebo hire can be very reasonable and also gives you the chance to try out a gazebo before making the decision to add one permanently to your garden. You will be able to see the benefits it offers for yourself, without spending a lot of money on something that you may not use again.

Whatever your taste in garden furniture, you can’t go far wrong with a gazebo. These handy structures come in all shapes and sizes, from the roll-up tent affair that can be erected and dismantled as and when required, to the ornate, wrought-iron structure familiar from many stately homes that provides a focal point for the garden.

But you don’t have to be landed gentry anymore to have a garden gazebo, and in fact they serve a very useful purpose in our admittedly short summers, providing cool shade from the sun and effectively extending the house in a relaxed and informal manner, a happy compromise between the stuffy indoors and a possibly too-open garden area.

But as well as gazebos that meet the needs of a social gathering, there are those that provide a more intimate setting, such as roof-swing gazebos and small garden arbours. To make the garden a real focal point for summer entertainment, especially if you have kids, you can’t beat a hot tub gazebo, which combines protection from too much sun with the luxury of a heated pool, and virtually guarantees a noisy and fun day.

For a more permanent option, and more affordable than a fully fledged extension, there’s the patio gazebo, which as the name implies sits on your patio and can be as basic or sophisticated in terms of materials and style as you want.

A gazebo is a natural choice when it comes to extending the potential of your garden.

Travertine is used as a cladding for prestigious buildings, although one of its principal uses is for flooring for which it is ideally suitable. It is one of the oldest building materials known to man and the Romans used Travertine extensively, perhaps the most famous of these is the Colesseum which is the largest building in the world which uses this naturally found material. There are other buildings where natural Travertine stone is used and examples of these are to be found throughout Europe and also in America.

Travertine when used as a cladding material really enhances the appearance of a building, one of the best examples of which is the Getty Centre in Brentwood Los Angeles California. Travertine has always been evident on high class buildings in wash rooms, reception areas as well as outside cladding. Travertine is characterised by pitted holes and troughs in its surface, these occur naturally, and are usually filled before it is polished to the required finish, which can be a glossy sheen, a medium shine or an understated satin glow finish. All three finishes are beautiful and popular, but as with most things, finish is primarily a matter of taste. Today, European supplies come mainly from Turkey and Italy, although many people will argue that only the finest Travertine is thought to come from the Tivoli area in Italy which is where its name originated.

Importantly in the same way as the architects at today’s modern buildings have done, when considering using Travertine for your home, you should only buy the best Travertine, use a specialist importer and you will not be disappointed.

Cembrit Westerland fibre cement slates are the finishing touch for Hill House, an elite eco-development in Ropley, Hampshire. Specifically chosen to give the development a contemporary architectural feel, over 6,000 blue/black slates were used for the 6,700 sq ft timber frame house. Westerland slate comes in graphite, blue-black and also Welsh blue and looks very similar to natural slate. Its riven surface and natural dressed edges make it a perfect solution for where traditional appearance is important. The cement slates are very cost effective, lightweight, do not require grading or sorting and are suitable for all types of residential and commercial projects.

Built by The Malthouse Consultancy, Hill House is an exclusive design. The eco-friendly house is constructed from softwoods, so reducing the pressure on the rarer and slower growing hardwoods. The design also includes state of the art technology for heating and cooling with heat pumps and air handling and air heat recovery. Like all houses built by The Malthouse Consultancy, Hill House is bespoke and built to owner specification. Each slate in the Westerland fibre cement range is pre-holed and offers consistent width, depth and weight, saving valuable on site time on grading or sorting. The cement slates from Cembrit Blunn are manufactured using Portland cement together with a non-asbestos formulation of blended synthetic and cellulose fibres. Each slate is pigmented during production and fully compressed. They are then finished with a high quality, semi-matt acrylic coloured coating to the top face and edges, and a clear binder to the back face.
