Environmental Benefits of Underfloor Heating

The environmental benefits of underfloor heating are often overlooked, but if you choose to heat your home with underfloor heating then you are going to be playing your green card and adding to the environmental savings that many believe the world is so desperately in need of.

The reason that underfloor heating is so beneficial for the environment is down to the fact that it is so much more efficient than other central heating systems, which in turn means the temperatures required are so much lower. This leads to a significantly lower amount of energy being needed, which in turn leads to less fuel being required. If you install a wet underfloor heating system, for example, you only need to heat the water in the pipe work to about 40°C. This is, on average, half the temperature that we heat conventional radiator systems to, while the overall effect in the room is the same.

If you team this with a sensible choice of floor covering, one that allows the heat to come through easily and which can transmit the heat effectively, you are creating a heating system that is almost perfect. Obviously it would not be very clever to use a flooring material that makes heat transmission less efficient or all the benefits would be lost, as you would have little choice but to have water temperatures much higher. This would negate any savings you could have made by installing a more suitable material, so choose your flooring carefully.
