How to Pick the Right Carpet

So you’ve decided you need new carpet; now it’s time to decide what type you need! There are several different types of carpet. Some work better in formal rooms; others, while not as “luxurious looking” will stand up to the rough-and-tumble use it would get in a play room. Here are some of the primary types of carpet you can choose from:

Cut and Loop

Cut and loop gets its name from the cuts and loops of varying sizes that come together to form a pattern. Cut and loop carpet is great for high-traffic areas because its patterns tend to hide a myriad of flaws.

Saxony

Saxony is a thick carpet that’s been through a softening process after having been woven. The cut pile surface makes it great for formal areas. The carpet’s thickness makes it nice for rooms where you’d like to keep more heat in – like bathrooms or bedrooms.

Velvet

Just as the name implies, velvet carpeting has a fine, sheared surface. While gorgeous to look at, velvet carpet is high-maintenance and is therefore, more suitable to formal rooms and lower traffic areas.

Textured Plush

One of the most popular carpets, textured plush is cut so that all of the yarn lengths are at the same height. It’s a versatile carpet that can be used in almost any room and its textured appearance tends to hide stains and marks.

Berber Loop

Berber loop is a favourite of high-traffic, hard-used areas, as the dense looping resists being crushed down.
