How to Prepare a Wall for Tiling
A popular decoration for many homes today is installing decorative ceramic or metal wall tiles. Wall tiling is great in certain rooms of your home, for example in your kitchen or bathroom, because they look attractive but are easy to clean. If you’re planning on tiling a wall in your home then this article will provide you with information on how to prepare your wall for tiling.
The first rule of thumb is not to tie over old wallpaper as this can cause huge problems later. You therefore need to strip the wallpaper before you begin. It’s also recommended to lay a thin layer of plaster on an uneven wall, as this will provide a great starting surface. When tiling over a newly plastered wall be sure to let the plaster dry out completely, and then apply a primer sealer. This will stop tile adhesive from soaking into the porous plaster.
You can actually tile over tiles, however it’s recommended that you remove the old tiles first for the best results. It’s important not to line the grout of the new tiles with the grout of the new tiles because this will make the tiling weak. When tiling over painted walls, be sure to wash down the wall and rub it down with sandpaper. You must then remove all of the dust with a damp cloth.
Before you buy tiles, you’ll need to measure the area to be tiled carefully. Then you can work out how many tiles you need to buy. Sometimes it’s nice to mix different times into an attractive pattern. If you’re planning on doing this then you should lay the tiles in the pattern on the floor to see what it looks like before you fix them to the walls.
