How to Repair a Leaking Tap

The sound of a dripping tap is something we’ve all laid awake too at some point in our lives. It is also something that needs tending to as quickly as possible. Not only can the sound of constant water dripping be a hindrance, it is also a terrible waste of water, especially if allowed to go on for a long period of time. If you pay for water via a meter you will notice a difference in the upcoming bills.

Generally, a leaking tap means the washer inside needs to be changed. Luckily, this is a quick and inexpensive job. To see if your tap needs a washer replacement, you will need to remove the headgear or tap covers. Turn off the water and place the plug in the sink to avoid any small parts falling down inside. To lose a screw or a nut will mean an additional run to the hardware shop.

Using a flathead screwdriver, simply remove the cover to expose a retaining screw, then remove the tap. An 8mm spanner should help remove any visible nuts that may be holding the tap in place. Be careful not to damage any of the parts. It’s equally important to ensure the tap itself does not turn while you are removing the nuts as this could cause a leak in the pipes, and then you will definitely need a plumber.

You should now see the washer. Prise it with a flathead screwdriver and replace it by fitting a new washer in its place. This should solve your leaking tap problem.
