Ladder safety tips
Ladder misuse causes most DIY accidents. Here are some basic safety tips.
• Use the right ladder for the job. Too tall or too short is a problem, as is using a metal ladder next to power cables.
• For once, do not wear boots. Wear shoes to let the feet feel the ladder, but not too thin.
• Before ascending, clean the soles of the shoes of any mud and tuck trouser bottoms and other loose clothing away.
• Carry tools in a drop bag that can be discarded in case of a fall.
• Climb looking ahead, not up or down.
• The top rung is for hands, not feet. Stand four rungs down, or get a longer ladder.
• Do not lean out.
• When possible, have a trusted colleague anchor the base of the ladder with foot and hands.
• Place ladder on a flat, firm surface.
• Store wooden ladders off the ground.
• Aluminium ladders conduct electricity – watch out when moving.
• Always have three points of contact with the ladder when climbing.
• If working in front of a door, lock it.
