Small Bathroom Design

Not every house has a large bathroom and more often than not, the cost of enlarging it is prohibitive.

However, a few simple ideas will enable you to make the most of your existing space and create the illusion of having a much larger area than you actually possess.

Foremost among these is to properly assess exactly what you do or do not need. Carpet, for instance, reduces a room’s apparent space. Taking it up and polishing the underlying wood is a relatively cheap and very effective of opening up the room.

Complement the wood floor with pastel colours. This will give the room a bright, airy feel, particularly when coupled with bold, strong patches of colour on the walls.

Another useful idea is to hang pictures of landscapes or views of the sea. Quite often this gives an illusion of looking out onto wide-open spaces and enhances the otherwise close proximity of the bathroom walls.

Bathroom mirrors are also vital illusionist devices. If possible, situate two mirrors opposite each other or if not, place one so that it reflects against a chrome and clear glass shower area. Swapping a large mirror for one composed of a mosaic of smaller mirrors is also a useful trick.

Many interior designers now advise against having any bathroom accessories fitted that do not lie flush against the wall. Wall shelves, in particular, take up an unnecessary amount of space. Hooks fitted to the back of the door will take care of the towels just as effectively.
